Facing a heterogeneous portfolio of ageing signalling systems, significant capacity constraints, and a shortage of skilled maintenance personnel, the Danish Parliament made a strategic decision in 2009 to move forward with a nationwide deployment of the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 across Banedanmark’s network—fully replacing existing legacy systems.

This initiative represents a major step toward improving network performance, reliability, and interoperability.
