🚄 Italy, a pioneer in ERTMS and High-Speed Rail
Italy has been an early investor in ERTMS. This system has played a key role in increasing rail transport’s market share in the country, and the completion of the High-Speed network is expected to bring even greater economic and social benefits.
Since the early 2000s, Italy has been heavily investing in High-Speed lines, with the first ERTMS-equipped lines launched in 2005.
Today, RFI (Rete Ferroviaria Italiana) has initiated an accelerated plan to deploy ERTMS across the entire national railway network by 2036. This ambitious project represents a total investment of €15 billion.
10,236 km of the Italian network is part of the TEN-T network. The completion of high-speed rail corridors in December 2009 made it possible to travel between Milan and Rome in under three hours.
